A report of a feasibility study showing that HS2 could be tunnelled beneath the whole of the Chilterns AONB, was published today, 25 April 2014. A fully-bored tunnel under the Chilterns would remove the vast majority of the highly-damaging impacts of the current proposals. These include the loss of ancient woodlands and damage to Scheduled Monuments.
The cost of such a tunnel, according to the report which was commissioned by Chiltern District Council, would be only 2% of the overall cost of Phase 1 of HS2.
