Comments made in support of High Speed 2 from unions and economists last week generated a swift response from anti-HS2 campaigners, who pointed out some salient facts including that the UK already has over 13% of global high speed rail capacity (defined as 124mph plus). This puts us on a par with France and Germany and ahead of Japan. Steve Rodrick of the Chilterns Conservation Board also made the point that the Government will not be giving the full go-ahead to HS2 this week - that is for Parliament to decide, once a Hybrid Transport Bill is put before it, which will be no earlier than 2013.
