The HS2 Summit in Aylesbury was an opportunity for representatives of local communities to raise issues of concern and to discuss the community forums that have been organised by HS2 Ltd along the proposed route. A number of presentations by experts were also given, including a noise expert and a construction professional. Alison Munro, Chief Executive of HS2 Ltd, also spoke.
Issues raised included concerns that the community forums will just be box-ticking exercises for HS2 Ltd, rather than an opportunity to genuinely listen to and respond to the concerns of local people. The very tight timescales were also raised, which leave little time for environmental surveys to be carried out.
Steve Rodrick, Chief Officer of the Chilterns Conservation Board, gave a powerful presentation on the impacts of HS2 on the Chilterns AONB, its wider impacts on carbon emissions, and the only acceptable mitigation measures if the rail line cannot be stopped.
