There are 170 different commons within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and another 88 commons in the Chilterns within 3km of the AONB boundary. So many commons lie just outside the AONB because settlements often grew up around commons, and most settlements are excluded from the AONB.
186 commons can be found on this interactive map and most listings include a description and a photo. The commons which haven't been mapped are very small, often ponds or patches of land which were 'manorial waste' rather than true commons.
The boundaries shown are approximate. Definitive registers showing boundaries are kept by local authorities.
If you'd like to see where the commons are on paper, this map showing the largest 50 commons in the Chilterns area might help.
