Whipsnade Heath

Enjoying

Explore this common on one of the footpaths or bridleways that cross it. It can also be enjoyed as part of a circular walk which takes in Dunstable Downs as well.

Wildlife

Visit in the Spring to enjoy beautiful displays of bluebells and wood anemones. Since the decline of sheep grazing there is little heathland left as scrub such as hawthorn, elder and blackthorn has grown up. The open areas of woodland are filled with unusual plants and fungi as well as trees such as oak, wild cherry, beech and hazel.

This ancient beech tree, known as the "Witches Beech" stands on the boundary bank by the circular path around the common.  Find out how it got its name by looking here

Features

Small hollows that be spotted in the scrub are remnants of quarrying which have been left behind by locals removing flint for road surfacing and lime for the fields.

Facilities

Small car park, picnic area and information boards. Pub in nearby Whipsnade or Studham.
