Checkendon pub wins Walkers' and Cyclists' Award

Tuesday 15 September 2015

The Chiltern Society has announced the results of its Favourite Walkers’ & Cyclists’ Pub Award. The overall winner is the Highwayman, Exlade Street near Checkendon in south Oxfordshire. Well done to the landlords Paul & Evelyne Burrows. The Highwayman is a country pub with lots of character in a beautiful rural location.

The winner for the Central Chilterns is the Polecat Inn, Prestwood and for the Northern area The Valiant Trooper, Aldbury. It was also decided to award a Highly Commended certificate to the Red Lion, Dagnall where the landlords have worked wonders in turning around a struggling village pub.

The criteria for the judging were developed from what the voters told us were the important features to them of a great pub. These were - warm welcome and pleasant staff, efficient service with a smile, good value food, enjoyable menu selection,  good range of beer and wine including some local ales, pleasant surroundings, good atmosphere, attractive garden, open fire in winter and dog friendly.

The winners were the pubs achieving the highest scores against these criteria with the judges reporting that they were very pleased to discover such impressive standards of hospitality in Chiltern pubs. Hearty congratulations to the four winners!
